1790 Lava Flow, Makena - The youngest lava flow in Maui occurred in 1790 and created La Perouse Bay. A road was built through this extremely rough terrain of lava rock and the King's Trail continues around the southern coast of the island.
Jawz Tacos, Makena - Even though this is now a restaurant in Kihei, we managed to find the original location: the Jawz Tacos truck parked on the side of the road in Makena on the way to the 1790 lava flow. We only had shave ice there, but since we're moving to a hotel near there, we'll probably visit again for their highly recommended tacos and burritos.
Da Sushi Bar, Kahului - This is actually located inside Wow Wee Maui (see below) and has the same address. From your Wow Wee Maui table, you could order special sushi rolls such as the Baked Cali, a california roll topped with creamy sauce and scallops, broiled and topped with masago roe and bonito flakes, or the Surf and Turf, shrimp tempura with asparagus rolled and topped with strips of filet mignon, ginger dressing and ponzu sauce.
Wow Wee Maui Kava Bar and Grill, Kahului - Here we had some local Maui food including a Mahi Mahi sandwich and a vegetarian Taro Burger. However, the most interesting thing was the Kava which we had in drink form straight up and in a Kava Kolada. Straight up the kava drink was slightly bitter with a rooty flavor: not very pleasant IMHO but the pictures above are just me acting. There was no sweet, salty or sour taste, just the bitter earthy root-ness. It did make my tongue and throat feel slightly numb, a typical side effect along with feelings of relaxation and help sleeping. The Kolada version was a little more palatable. I planned to pick up some of their Kava Chocolate but they were sold out.

BTW, I found the Daily Gluttony blog includes a section on Maui when the author went to Maui to get married and have a honeymoon. Check out the previous posts links on the right for the other parts of her review. In part 4 she acutally discusses Jawz Tacos (she didn't like it so much) but I figure I'll give it a chance. She also discusses Da Kitchen which she says is decent. After reading all of her writing, I'm not sure I really agree with her opinions (after all she hates papaya and cilantro) but just to see how they line up, we may try a few of her other local experiences to see how we feel about them.

I'm not the biggest fan of cilantro, papaya, or even mango myself, but if your taste doesn't line up with the Daily Glutton's, then there's nothing wrong with that. I'm just intrigued by the quality of your cameraphone pictures: the pixelation actually makes them (slightly) resemble Impressionist paintings! I think this is the first time I'm not bothered by low-res blockiness.

There's nothing wrong with Daily Glutton's tastes being different, but if I don't generally agree, then her reviews won't make a good ruler for me to follow.
